"Hello? Hello? Why won't this call go through?"
It's a new phenomenon that's sweeping America. A feel-good triumph of the human spirit. A can't-put-it-down thriller with a bootstrap twist. No...not really. It's just a $5.00 work shirt and a camera.I'm talking about Tuesday Shirt, which I found at Value Village earlier this year. It's a nice cotton short-sleeved shirt, dark red with a faint pattern in the fabric. It would look nicer if I ironed it, but I always gravitate towards apparel that I can pull out of the dryer and put on immediately. I like it mostly because it's long and stays tucked in - a common issue for the way I'm built, even when I'm skinny. The purchase price of $5.00 doesn't hurt either. Value Village is the perfect place to find work shirts for jobs where you aren't facing the public day to day; at the office, dress code for men requires a shirt with a collar - no t-shirts, tank tops, or shorts. I prefer short sleeve shirts because the long-sleeved ones bunch up around the wrists of my short arms, unless I buy $40 fitted ones (no thanks). Between Value Village and Goodwill, I've outfitted myself for a full work week and beyond. And it's not just me; a coworker has been doing this for years, only he has a penchant for Hawaiian shirts instead. Anyway...
For no good reason I've been wearing the same shirt on Tuesday since July (yes, I'm washing it...thank you very much). One morning Sherry asked, "So is that your Tuesday Shirt?" It had a harmlessly goofy ring to it, so in a what-the-heck move I have been taking a picture of myself in that shirt every Tuesday since August 25th and posting it on Facebook. Yesterday - as the next Tuesday Shirt Tuesday approached - I decided to start a TS photo set on Flickr, to share the glory that is Tuesday Shirt through the blog. In the photo set you will find pictures of me wearing this shirt, taken on the second work day of the week. It's that simple.
Or so it seems...
Admittedly I would rather take pictures of someone/something else instead of self portraits, so it's a challenge for me to turn the camera around and snap the snapper. Maybe this is why Tuesday Shirt exists, to loosen me up to the notion that I don't need to be self-conscious. Then again, maybe it's not so existential; I might just be a goober.
