Something Special

Videos of David and Jack at The Playground

David on The Swing

Updated Links to Jack's Video

Every evening, when I pick David up at the Y, he asks to something different. The latest list includes:

  • "Can we go to Fred Meyer?"
  • "Can we go to McDonald's?"
  • "Can we go to Toys R Us?"
  • "Can we go to my friend Andrew's house?" (It's 8pm on a school night when this is asked)
  • "Can we go to Skate King?"
  • "Can we go to the medicine store?" (Code for Bartell's Drug, where I get Diclofenac and he gets Hot Wheels)
  • "Can we go bowling?"
  • "Can we go to the Beach?"

I never know what's he's going to ask for. But last night he asked:

  • "Can we go do something special? Like going to a Park? There's one right there."

Just so happens there is one near the Y, so we stopped in to goof off for a while. David went straight for the swings, which he loves dealy. He learned how to self-start earlier this year and can swing for hours if given the opportunity. The constant movement of the swing seems to calm him and move life at the speed of his brain. And this was after he ran a 1/4 mile around the indoor track at the Y prior to our playground visit; he's constantly on the move. The above video and just a quick clip to capture some of the goofy faces he uses when he's moving back and forth!

Jack also spent a bit of time on the swings, but when he saw the rope ladder to the Slide - his favorite playground structure - swing time was over. The following video of him climbing the rope might give Mommy fits:

Jack figures out The Rope Ladder

The thing about Jack is that he is somewhat fearless. When he sees something he thinks he might be able to tackle, he does it. Period. Never mind that he was born with shorter legs; he used what he had to accomplish exactly the same thing as a three year old who was climbing with him. Only once did he ask me for help, the first time he tried the rope. After that, he climbed it maybe 7 more times before moving on to another part of the structure. Later on, as I was helping him do Chin Ups on another bar, I could feel that the muscles in his forearms were nearly as big as David's. It was amazing!

Bottom line: David wanted to do Something Special. I contend that isn't in where we go, but in who is going. I'd say Sherry and I have something special - a couple of strong sons who know how to have fun!
