Memorial Day 2008

This year I remember my Grandmother Martha, who went home to meet my Grandfather Harlow last summer. By her own description, she was "an old old old old woman" at her 95th birthday. When her body finally gave in, she was 98 and has seen more change than I could ever imagine. She was the last of my grandparents to die, outliving all the others by ten years.

But her mind was sharper than people half her age. In 2003 I showed her a picture taken in Grove City MN from 1926, of a rural baseball team in front of the bank. She identified about 80% of the guys in the photo, even going so far to say, "Oh, I had a crush on that one." Those who she couldn't were identified by another woman in her nursing home. I'm not sure what they put in the water in Meeker County, but I want some for myself!

David got a chance to meet and play with Grandma in 2003 when we went back to visit. I'm glad to have caught this video, as David stuffs toys into a cereal box while Grandma helps. He asks questions about her now, not remembering this visit but learning about her through my stories and the photos I've taken.

We all miss her, but at the same time we're all thankful to have had her around for so long. She was an amazing and wonderful lady!
