Slideshow - Camping Trip to Burlington

In the month that most people are winterizing, The Clark Gang gets out.  We've been known to camp in the rain for Halloween.  Last weekend, thankfully, while camping with my parents the only worldly phenomenon we had to endure was 33-degree nights.

Our travels took us to Burlington, self-described "Hub City of The Skagit Valley." This part of Western Washington is flat and fertile. At this time of year it can also be frozen, but still a great place to visit.  We stayed at a KOA Kampground on Old Highway 99 due north of town.  Back before Interstate 5 cut a concrete line through Skagit County, Highway 99 carried all the north/south traffic on the west coast between Mexico and Canada.  The old road is still the wide width of a US route - which it used to be - which makes for easy driving for a two-lane road.

While in the area we did some driving around to explore, but generally we stayed at the campground and goofed off.  That was easy to do, because the place is set up with indoor pool, recreational tricycles for all ages, game room, and zero cellphone coverage.  Sherry and I, being cellphone nerds 17 years running, accepted the fact that we were in a dead zone and found things to do other than checking Gmail, Yahoo, Twitter, and Facebook while camping.  Frankly, it was nice release - knowing that even if I tried to do anything with the phone it wouldn't connect anyway.  This is probably the first time I've been out of coverage in over a decade.  Some might say it's backwards, but I didn't really care; there was coverage once we drove into town.  But some spots simply aren't covered yet.  What I found the next day would only prove that some places in this world are still on Fifties Time.

While on our way out to see the area, we passed what appeared to be an old Hotel or shop of some kind right on Old 99.  Parked in front - in all its rusty glory - was 1959 or 1960 Lincoln Continental that appears to have been there at least 15 years.  Oddly enough, it wasn't rusted out on th exterior.  However, all the windows were shot out, graffiti graced its flanks, and blackberries had routed themselves anywhere they could hitch a path.  A good one-third of the car was covered.

There are about 30 photos from our trip posted on Photobucket.  I tried to embed a slideshow here for your enjoyment, but the code wouldn't cooperate with the Blogger tool.  So to view more photos from the trip, click on the pictures above or click on the link below!
