Inauguration Day Humor

There are plenty of media sources covering this historic day. But what about the humor? Who's covering that? Well Clarkblog is there to stand in the gap...

One of my favorite commentators is James Lileks from Minnesota; he's got a way of taking the absurdity of life and turning it into something that is both somewhat respectful and humorous. A favorite book of ours in the Clark household is "Interior Desecrations," which focuses on scary Seventies furnishing ideas pulled straight from the decade (Sherry and I found the source for his book in a used book store in Long Beach WA once, and the real thing was even scarier).

On Twitter yesterday, he made a few comments about a few inauguration speeches from the past. Here they are, compiled for easy viewing:

FDR: "I shall save the nation with the power of my droning patrician voice."

JFK: "Do not even think of screwing with us or our chowdah."

LBJ: "I am full of bourbon and meat."

Nixon: "'The American Dream does not come to those who fall asleep.' The line looked better on paper. Man, listening to Nixon's inaugural is like listening to someone saw the Manhattan phone book in half."

Reagan: "'Starting tomorrow, we will stop borrowing money and spending beyond our means.' Seriously."
