Yesterday a coworker stopped by my desk. "My daughter and I had a ham on Easter, and she doesn't want the rest. There's enough on it to carve off for some sandwiches, and then to make some soup. I put it in the fridge for you. Take it home." She then dropped it off at my desk later.
Cool! And to be honest there was a lot of ham left. So I soaked some pinto beans overnight and started cooking them with the ham at 5:30am today with some sea salt, Johnny's seasoning, and veggie bullion. About two hours later I added in two cut-up potatoes. Then I had to take my mom-in-law to the doctor at 8:15 so I shut off the heat and let the stuff just simmer in its own heat until we got home. Then I had some before I got in the shower. So how did it come out?
It's awesome! Really tasty. The beans finally cooked all the way; recipes for pinto bean tell me to simmer them for two hours after an overnight soak, but that never works in our kitchen. No, the command today was cook for three hours and then shut off the heat for another two/half. Probably the best non-recipe recipe I've ever pulled off. I'm taking more to work, but I'll be adding some frozen peas to it as well. Wish I had some corn, but complaining won't do any good.
Yay for Free Ham & Virtually-Free Beans!
But do I take ham from just anyone? Nope. I know this coworker well enough; she's like one of the mother hens on my team. If it was just some dude in the hall I'd say no.
Just say Yes to Mother Hen Ham, and No to Unknown Dude Ham.
