These are Fall City Potatoes, a dish that consists of red potatoes, cubed ham, green onions, tomatoes, cheese, and topped with an egg your way if you like. Oh yeah...sour cream too. Sherry and I have been eating this for breakfast often for the last 16 years at Fall City Grill. It is - quite possibly - the greatest breakfast ever devised by mankind. It's also enormous; an entire plate of American goulash. Did I mention it comes with pancakes or toast? If you go away hungry from this, there is something seriously altered in your universe. But I am sad to say that was me once. I couldn't stop eating this stuff, and usually would help Sherry finish hers as well. There was a time when this plate would never have been photographed, because it would have been empty and lacking any sort of photographic intrigue. For the last 16 years I have regularly devoured every morsel of Fall City Potatoes and pancakes handed to me by the server, except for the sour cream. I look back over the last 20 years, and am astounded at the amount of food I consumed regularly. Why? Because I was hungry, or at least thought I was. It's a feeling I've battled since I was little, constantly gnawing at me like I need to eat more. Even now I can eat something that is more carb than protein, and the feelings are back in a matter of minutes. Frustrating? You know it. In reality my body was sending the wrong signal, and telling me that I needed something in my stomach - when in fact it was already over-full.
So back to the Potatoes. The plate above marks a milestone; today, I could not finish my potatoes. It was just too much food! But wait...I've regularly devoured this stuff and cleaned my plate for years. I suddenly realized that I'm eating less, and possibly getting a handle on his whole hunger pang battle. Walking, running, being careful, more or less, of what I eat - all these things are contributing to small changes that I hope will be life-long. The leftovers are in the fridge as I write this, ready for breakfast tomorrow.
This is the kind small change that I like!
