Photo of Alaskan Halibut Fleet - March 1963

Here's another one from the archives, from before I was born!

Overlooking the Harbor in Sand Point AK, my parents took this photo while they were out to look at the boats. I have memories of this harbor, but not of the dramatic mountains behind it. I love the colors here, and if I close my eyes I can smell the cold sea air.

My parents describe the scene like this:

"This picture is of the Sand Point harbor just before the halibut season opening in late March, 1963. It was one of the largest gatherings of boats for some time. They had to check in with Customs at Sand Point and wait until the International Halibut Commission declared the fishing was open. "Grandpa" Lyle Hansen was the Customs agent who checked all the boats in and out.

The big building at the right of the picture is the cold storage plant, where the frozen halibut were stored and the "engine room" where the diesel engines were that provided electrical power for the plant and the village."

The people in the picture, from left to right: sister Janice, friends Linda and Pauline, their Mom Fern, and my sister Karen.
