Leftover Bagel Snack

There's something to be said for the nation's natural sense of belt-tightening right now; it brings out creativity in the most interesting of places. A year ago, my day off would include a trip to Top Foods for a rice bowl made with General Tso's Chicken; these days a trip like that is considered with severe skepticism. Lunch now includes a trip to the kitchen and a quick survey of what's in the fridge.

Initially I was going to have some steamed rice with a chicken breast left over from last night, but I decided to forgoe the young leftovers for the not-so-young leftovers. There were all the elements to another Kurt recipe right in front of my eyes, everything to make a lunch that is savory, unique, and cheap cheap cheap. So I used the Hash Things Principle, which is "Meat, Cheese, Bread, Oven." The result today was a tasty tray of Cheapo Crunchy Meat Things Leftover Bagel Snacks:

  • One bag of refrigerated Bagelettes that should have been eaten last week

  • Two open round lunchmeat packs, one of turkey and the other of beef

  • Half a log of previously-opened Velveeta

With the over set to 400 degrees, cut the round lunchmeat into into threes. Using a cookie sheet sprayed with Pam, place meat on bagels and then top with Velveeta. Place in oven for 20 minutes, less time if you like softer Bagel Snacks.

The result was kind of of crunchy, possibly attributed to dried-out nature of the not-so-young bagels or maybe the temperature level of the oven. Doesn't matter to much, considering the end cost of each unit is about a nickel. Yay for the Hash Thing Principle!
