Video - David and Jaelin's Full Throttle Play Date

Whenever David and Jaelin play, it's time for some laughs and a whole bunch of pestering. They are like peas in a pod most of the time, but can drive each other crazy just as much. Often the transportation to and from a play date MAKES the play date, because they always find ways to have fun simply sitting in a car side by side (for the record, I hate the term 'play date'). That's why I broke out the videocam when David and Jaelin got together last week to play and eat spaghetti at our house. There's shenanigans in the truck, playing outside, Wii inside, dinner, and the rainy drive home. Jack also appears in the video, starting at about 5:30 minutes into the show, and provides with some classic Jack faces at the dinner table.

The raw footage we shot was over 80 minutes long! The kids even took over the videocam and shot some footage for themselves. I whittled it all down to 9 minutes, edited, and added music that is either in the Public Domain or in Creative Commons. A lot of the artists may be unknown in the States, but thanks to the awesomeness of Creative Commons they have allowed use of their work without asking permission - so long as credit is given. Also you'll hear bits of some rough 1966 studio tapes from the Grateful Dead, which I found on Archive.org. The Internet is a beautiful tool.

In a way this video is made up of several "mini-videos," with each event of the day having its own quality and music style. It makes we want to take classes; the whole process of putting 9 minutes on YouTube took several hours over several evenings before bed. No, it won't win any awards for showing the lives of growing kids, but it sure was fun to create something tangible like a video. Besides, Sherry and I will be able to share this with David, Jaelin and Jack...oh, say when they have their loved ones over for dinner in 2029!
